二、第二步：抓住干，识修饰
其次，要想快速的理解整个句子，我们需要先去抓住句子的主干。句子的主干其实就是主干上的主谓宾。我们可以先去句子中把所有的谓语找到，然后把连词找到，一个句子中谓语一定和其前最近的从属连词构成从句。Darwin was convinced /that the loss of these tastes was not only a loss of happiness, /but might possibly be injurious to the intellect,/ and more probably to the moral character.
谓语找到了之后，那么我们再去把连词找出来，都识别之后，那么我们对于整个句子结构就比较清晰了，主干部分就是：Darwin was convinced that…后边but并列 a loss of happiness和 might possibly be injurious to the intellect,/ and more probably to the moral character. 而and并列的是might possibly be injurious to the intellect和more probably to the moral character。
三、第三步：调语序，定句意
接下来我们就可以按照刚才我们划分的一个个小部分，逐个部分去翻译了。①Darwin was convinced 译成：达尔文确信;②that the loss of these tastes was not only a loss of happiness 译成：失去这些品味不仅是失去幸福;③and more probably to the moral character. 译成：更有可能伤害道德品质。
四、第四步：依逻辑，组整句
最后我们看一看有没有需要调整语序的部分，然后把句子连接到一起就可以了。译文：达尔文确信，失去这些品味不仅丧失幸福，而且可能会损害智力，更有可能伤害道德品质。
